Pepper’s Outage Tips
When the lights go out, things can feel a little scary! But your resident outage expert — me, Pepper! — is here to give you my best tips and tricks for preparing for and getting through an outage.
PREPPING BEFORE A STORM
If the weather is forecasting stormy conditions that could result in some outages, it’s best to get things ready just in case. Here are a few things you can do to stay ready:
- Ensure all electronic devices and charging banks are fully charged, and unplug sensitive electronics or use surge protectors
- Place flashlights, candles, and other outage necessities in easy to reach areas. Write down any important phone numbers, including emergency responders and friends and family, and store those in an easy to reach place
- Keep at least a half-tank of gas in your car, or charge up your EV
- Know how to shut off your utilites – gas, water, and electricity – just in case
ASSEMBLE YOUR OUTAGE KIT
If the power goes out, having a stocked outage kit near by can make all the difference. Aim to have 3-5 days worth of supplies on hand, and store these in a bucket or bag for easy transportation:
- Drinking water and canned/non-perishable
- Blankets, sweaters, warm socks
- Flashlights, candles, battery operated lanterns
- Fully charged battery banks and emergency
- Battery operated clock/radio and phone
- Extra batteries (i.e. AA, AAA)
- First Aid supplies
- Electricity free entertainment (books, puzzles, games, etc)
- Don’t forget food and other supplies for furry family members
