OPALCO Board Nominations are OPEN!

It’s a pivotal time for the energy world, with important issues to tackle that will shape our communities for years to come
It’s that time of year when Orcas Power & Light Cooperative members step up to run for the board of directors. Nominations are now open for the 2026 election. Two positions are open: one in District 1 (San Juan, et al), and one in District 2 (Orcas Island, et al).

OPALCO has seven board positions in four districts. Directors are elected for three-year terms, with terms staggered so there are multiple open positions each election cycle. Co-op members from all backgrounds and representing all identities are encouraged to apply.

The co-op values diverse experience and skill sets—you do not need to be an engineer or have previous experience with utilities. Our organization includes business management, finance and accounting, legal, insurance, benefits, education and training, marketing and communications, customer service, technology, public policy, construction, procurement, engineering, design, project management, permitting and operations. If you have expertise in any of these areas or other pertinent experience, you may be a good fit.

Co-op directors are paid a stipend for their time and service, and OPALCO provides board and industry training. As a not-for-profit cooperative, having a democratically elected board is key to the structure of the organization. All members vote for all positions, regardless of their home district.

There are two ways to be nominated to the OPALCO Board: by committee or by petition. Any qualified member may submit their nomination to the volunteer member Elections & Governance Committee, where nominations are reviewed for the ballot. If not approved via committee, potential candidates may still apply by petition. To do so, they must submit a petition with at least 20 signatures of members who live in their districts, as well as complete the application process. To qualify for nomination, candidates must live in one of the districts, be a member in good standing, be at least 18 years old, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Applications by committee are due by noon Feb. 2. Applications by petition are due by noon March 2. The full list of candidates is posted March 13. Being an OPALCO board member is a powerful way you can get involved in your community and be a local change-maker. Board members make decisions on rates, policies and our shared energy future. Having a seat on the OPALCO Board of Directors can be a great way to have an active say in the everyday lives of islanders throughout San Juan County.
