Orcas Power & Light Cooperative (OPALCO) delivers power to about 11,200 members on 20 islands by way of an automated distribution system that includes:

  • 1,339 miles of power lines (87% underground) including 43 miles of overhead transmission lines (2014)
  • 15 distribution submarine cables, covering 14 miles
  • 11 transmission submarine cables, covering 2 miles
  • 11 substations

Our mostly hydro-electric power (see fuel mix) is generated by Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). In addition, OPALCO has more than 200 (and growing) members who generate their own local, renewable power and are interconnected to our grid.
