Como cooperativa, OPALCO no genera ganancias. Los ingresos adicionales al costo de operar se denominan &quot;m\u00e1rgenes&quot;. Estos m\u00e1rgenes representan un pr\u00e9stamo sin intereses para capital operativo que los socios otorgan a la cooperativa y que luego se devuelve en forma de cr\u00e9ditos de capital al socio despu\u00e9s de 25 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Este a\u00f1o, m\u00e1s de 6,000 miembros recibir\u00e1n cheques de cr\u00e9dito de capital. Cada a\u00f1o, la cooperativa registra cu\u00e1nto pagan por la energ\u00eda y determina qu\u00e9 porcentaje del margen recibir\u00e1n en forma de cr\u00e9ditos de capital. Las jubilaciones de los cr\u00e9ditos de capital se pagan a los miembros despu\u00e9s de 25 a\u00f1os, y la Junta Directiva de OPALCO eval\u00faa las condiciones financieras y decide si aprueba los desembolsos. Los cheques enviados este a\u00f1o corresponden a los miembros activos en 2000 y 2001. Los montos de los cheques var\u00edan entre cinco y miles de d\u00f3lares (para grandes consumidores de energ\u00eda, como supermercados); la mayor\u00eda de los cheques son por entre $50 y $250.<\/p>\n<p>Se donaron m\u00e1s de $25,000 mediante cheques recurrentes de cr\u00e9dito de capital para apoyar el Proyecto Pal, uno de los programas de asistencia energ\u00e9tica de OPALCO. El Proyecto Pal ofrece una subvenci\u00f3n \u00fanica (anual) a miembros de bajos ingresos durante la temporada de calefacci\u00f3n. Los miembros tendr\u00e1n la opci\u00f3n de donar sus cr\u00e9ditos de capital al recibir el cheque.<\/p>\n<p>En 2018, OPALCO implement\u00f3 una metodolog\u00eda de suavizado para garantizar que los retiros generales sean lo m\u00e1s parejos posible de un a\u00f1o a otro y para planificar los m\u00e1rgenes mayores que se produzcan. Por lo tanto, se distribuy\u00f3 todo el a\u00f1o 1999, m\u00e1s aproximadamente 46% del a\u00f1o 2000.
