Broadband Initiative

OPALCO has developed a plan to build new telecommunications infrastructure that would support improvements to our electric system, provide public safety benefits including better radio communications, provide cellular companies an easier way to expand cellular phone service locally and deliver modern, upgradable broadband services: both home telephone and high-speed Internet services.

For a total of $90 – about what most of us are paying now to CenturyLink – you would get:

• Reliable fast Internet (10Mbps in rural areas, 50Mbps+ in population centers) with capability for growth

• Unlimited use local and national long-distance phone service using your current phone number and existing phone

• Wifi access in population centers and at ferry landings

The financial plan for this system requires that more than half the membership subscribe to the broadband service. OPALCO’s Board of Directors is asking members to demonstrate their commitment by signing up for the service in advance. This way, we can be sure that these services can be provided without becoming a financial burden on our cooperative.
