Modern appliances and electrical outlets are great helpers in and around your home -- but you should know how to use them safely.

  1. Never put a fork or other METAL object in a toaster while it is plugged in.

  2. Do not leave irons or other hot objects UNATTENDED.

  3. Don't TOUCH plumbing and an appliance at the same time.

  4. Place plastic shields in RECEPTACLES to prevent toddlers from inserting objects in them.

  5. Don't CLIMB trees that have power lines near them.

  6. Appliance CORDS should not be placed where they could be walked on, tripped over, or damaged.

  7. Don't touch an electrical appliance or switch with wet hands or while standing in WATER.

  8. Never touch, kick, pull, or attempt to move a fallen WIRE or anything it touches. Call your power company immediately.

  9. Make sure that APPLIANCES don't have frayed cords or broken plugs.

  10. Never fly KITES near power lines.

  11. Never climb POWER poles.

  12. Do not install ANTENNAS or long metal objects within falling distance of electrical lines.

  13. Keep electric radios, hair dryers, or other electric appliances away from the BATHTUB or swimming pool.

  14. Don't YANK on a cord to remove plug from receptacle.

  15. Never play on or near SUBSTATIONS, pad mount or pole transformers, or other power company equipment.

  16. Insert three-prong PLUGS on appliance cords into three-prong outlets.

  17. Use LADDERS far enough away from electric lines so that if they fell, they would not come into contact with the power line.

  18. Never use the INSULATORS on poles for target practice. Without insulators, electricity can flow through the pole to the ground.

  19. Don't shoot at birds on electric wires. If the line is hit, the wire becomes weak and flexes with the wind. When it breaks it is a real DANGER.

  20. If someone receives a SHOCK from a wire or an appliance and can't get loose, don't touch them! You could get shocked too. If you can, unplug the appliance or turn off the power at the main switch in the service box. Call for help right away!
