OPALCOGRAM 188

As you know, I am often wrong about things, and this is one of those times when I am glad I was wrong. Back in 1990, after the second devastating storm had wrecked our system, your board decided to institute the Storm Abatement Program. Over the past six years, we have done a lot of work to reduce the extent and scope of wind-related outages. Shortly after we adopted the storm abatement program, I was talking to a homeowner's association on Orcas, explaining why their rates were going to go up. As part of my presentation, I made the statement, "The problem with this program is that, if we are successful, you will never notice it because people don't think about us when their lights are on, they only think about us when they are off." One of our members stood up to assure me that the next time the wind blew and his lights stayed on, he would remember.

Sure enough, with all of the problems we had over Christmas and New Years, most of our lights did stay on. We received literally hundreds of notes, phone calls and letters from you showing your appreciation for our efforts. I want to share some of these comments with you:

"My husband and I want to thank you all for a job well done during the big storm. We never lost power!"

"Thanks for being there. We had power the whole time. All those planning ahead days we saw you out there. Anyway, sorry to read you still had to hustle and freeze round the clock. You do a great job - we appreciate you all year."

"Thank you for the wonderful service. We had almost no inconvenience during our blizzard or snow and windstorms thanks to you and your crews. We are very dependent upon electricity since my husband's illness last year and his dependency on his oxygen etc. machines. We had considered moving but now we may reconsider."

"To the Hard Working Men and Women of OPALCO - Many thanks for making our Christmas warm and bright!"

"I am writing on behalf of all our members to thank the OPALCO crew that worked until well past midnight to restore our power. I hope we were the last, and that they got some well-deserved rest thereafter."

"You all did a great job in getting ready for storms like this! And in handling this one!!"

"Thanks from [our] community for only five hours day time loss of power during recent storms over Christmas!"

"I want to let you know how very much I appreciate that you undergrounded our power lines years ago. During our recent winter disaster, it was wonderful to have power. Plus, if there is ever any problem, your Lopez crew is commendable."

"Thanks for keeping the power on! Handle Bonneville as you think best."

"We would like to add our thanks to the many other letters you have received for the hard work of the OPALCO crews during our recent storm. . . I am sure your storm abatement program helped prevent even larger outages."

"I like the little notes on your bills."

"Thank you for steadily improving service over the last eighteen years."

As I said before, all of us at OPALCO appreciate your support and comments. Winds out of the south or southwest tend to hit the mainland worse than us. Winds out of the northeast tend to hit us worse than the mainland. We've still got a long way to go before we consider the job done. In the meantime, all of us at OPALCO appreciate your understanding when we do have a problem.

Thank you.
