"Would you believe the Grinch was here - took all the presents, the tree, the decorations, the Christmas goose? Or how about Donner, Blitzen and the boys wanting double time for the 24th? The elves are on strike, and Rudolph in a snit? Then how about the truth: two weeks and counting - need a tree, need cards, need gifts and to wrap and to mail them. Let's blame it on the Grinch, the reindeer, the elves, and anyone else in the way."

So begins my wife, Marie's, newsletter to our friends spread all over the country. It seems the same here at OPALCO. The workload on all of the employees - with outages, all of our new construction, and the Load Management Program - all have made 1996 an especially busy year. At the same time, we all feel particularly positive about the progress that we have made during this year.

Every OPALCO employee has done a great job in meeting your needs as members and owners of our cooperative. Personally, I don't believe we have ever had a year that was as busy as 1996. I find this particularly surprising since we didn't have any major problems or catastrophes such as serious storms, submarine cable repairs, substation construction or so on. This year was more a case of many minor projects, all adding together to take up all the available time.

I feel particularly good about the job we have done for you this year. We are seeing the results of many long term projects to reduce the number and severity of outages faced by our members and to get our Load Management Program up and going. If you are among the 1200 who have signed up, thank you for your willingness to help in this effort.

During 1997, you are going to see a renewed commitment by OPALCO on behalf of our members. Customer choice, allowing you to choose your electric power supplier, is coming and will be a reality before long. We want to make sure that you continue to buy your power from us, and we believe that we will do this by exceeding your expectations in every facet of our operations.

Overall, I want to thank you, our members, for all the help that you have given us during the year. We can't do all this work ourselves, and it has been your assistance and willingness to chip in and help that has made it such a successful year. On behalf of all of the employees, we want to wish everybody a happy and safe holiday season.

And here is the closing from my wife's newsletter: "Well, lights are up and so are wreathes, but somebody better get a move on the rest of this festival. Gonna tell Donner, Blitzen and the boys they will get straight time - after all, where else would they find a job working just one night a year? And the elves better get back to work, or I will bring in scab labor. Gonna tell Rudolph to "get over it" and gonna hit the Grinch with the sack he's stashed all the goodies in. I have run out of other people to blame it on."
