OPALCOGRAM 115
5/12/94

Doug Bechtel
Boy! Time goes fast when you’re having fun! It seems like just a few weeks ago we were all very busy getting ready for our 1993 annual meeting. Here it is 1994, and we are at it again.

This year our annual meeting is Saturday, May 21st. There will be ads in the paper and we will mail our annual report shortly, which will have all the specifics on the ferry schedule for the annual meeting. As in previous years, we will use a chartered boat to bring our San Juan Island members to Orcas to board the ferry.

Our member attendance at the annual meeting has been pretty good for the past several years. It seems like there was always major bad news to discuss at the meeting, whether it was a storm, submarine cable, or something else. This year the news is good.

1993 was a very successful year for OPALCO. We got our submarine cable work done with no major problems (and under budget). The storm abatement program is showing positive results with far fewer outages and, in general, there does not seem to be any overriding issue to bring members out to the annual meeting. This makes me nervous. Our bylaws require a quorum of 100 members to make the annual meeting valid. In most cases a husband and wife only hold one membership, so that doubles the number of people that need to attend the meeting. If we don’t get a quorum, we have to go through the process all over again - an expense (and hassle) I sure don’t want to have to face.

Each year your co-op needs one day from you. We have moved our meeting schedule to a late morning ferry and most of you should be home by 2:00 p.m. to enjoy the rest of Saturday. As usual, there will be a buffet lunch served on the ferry and we will have lots of interesting door prizes. Hopefully, you come to the annual meeting to find out about your cooperative. If the lunch and door prizes help you decide to come, they are worth it.

This is my 6th annual meeting, and they are getting to be more fun for me because I am getting to know more and more of our members, particularly those who don’t live on Orcas Island.

I hope you can find time in your schedule to attend the annual meeting. Don’t forget Saturday, May 21st. See you there.
