Be prepared to pinpoint the location of your dig site. If you're in a city or town, give the agent the exact street address including directions (North, South, East, or West) and suffixes (Lane, Road, Drive, Avenue, Street, etc.).
If you are outside the city limits without a street address or in a new subdivision, the following will help; driving directions to the site, township, range, section, and 1/4 section (PLS).
Describe the type of work to be done and some detail as to where you are working on the site. . .white paint marking the borders of your excavation site is a great help to the utility locators in trying to do a good job for you!
Plan your start date and time to comply with your state law (at least 2 but not more than 10 business days advance notice).
The UULC will notify subscribing utilities and other underground facility owners for you. Utility representatives will come to your work site and mark where their buried facilities are located.
Once the site has been marked or you have been notified that a particular facility owner has nothing at your dig site, you can begin to dig SAFELY.
Remember, those marks tell you to dig at least 2 feet away from them, they do not mean DIG HERE!
If you must dig near the marks, use a shovel and expose the lines carefully before proceeding.
